Happy Saturday morning! I’ve got another girlie birthday cake this week! This one is for a little girl named Lisle who is turning 5… Her Hello Kitty themed birthday party clearly called for custom Hello Kitty birthday cake, so voila! It’s a two-tier chocolate cake with pink vanilla buttercream filling. The pink icing is vanilla fondant, and the decorations are done in fondant and gum paste.

This weekend was dedicated to one of my entries for this year’s Capitol Confectioners Club show/competition (That Takes the Cake 2009). I decided several weeks ago to attempt a three-tier wedding style cake decorated in a tile-like mosaic. With 12 different colors of fondant, this was a big project and took most of the weekend. The “cake” is actually styrofoam since it’s for the show - an interesting new medium to work with. :) Now that this cake is ready to go, I’ve got 1 or 2 more that I need to rock out for this weekend!
Wow! What a busy 24 hours! I did three cakes for Saturday - no small feat with a day job. Cake #1 was for my sweet little neighbor, a lovely little girl having her third birthday party. She requested a white cake with pink icing… see below for the results! It’s a sour cream white cake with pink buttercream filling and pink fondant. The little white flowers are fondant with a touch of royal icing.
Cake #2 was another birthday cake for a little lady, this one turning eight today. She has a love for all things crafty and requested a painter-inspired cake. This cake was vanilla with chocolate buttercream filling and vanilla fondant. The fondant was handpainted to look like watercolor, and there are a handmade fondant painter’s palette (with royal icing paint) and a few paintbrushes as accents. Here it is:
Cake #3 was a quick little cake for my lovely neighbor Courtney… a fun little buttercream. It’s a sour cream chocolate cake with peanut butter and Reese’s Cup filling, iced with chocolate and vanilla buttercream.
My boyfriend and I hosted a New Year’s Eve party at our new home in Austin this past year… tons of fun, but a little crazy since we returned from holiday travels the night before… I wanted to do a cake for the event, but didn’t have much time - the result is this two-tier fondant cake. The bottom tier is chocolate with coconut cream cheese filling, iced in vanilla fondant. The top tier is chocolate cake with peanut butter filling, iced in chocolate fondant. I decided to do real ribbon given the short timeframe. Whew!
